Keyword research is an essential step we need to do properly in order to make money with Google Adsense for our blog. Today, the Blogging Guide that I’m going to share with you is step by step how to use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to do the keyword research.
As what I mentioned before, we need to meet the 3 criteria when choosing the best keyword phrase. We can make full use of Google Adwords Keyword Tool, which is a free service tool to help us to choose the best keyword phrase.
Step by step Using Google Adwords Keyword Tool
To make you much easier to understand, I will use an example to show you step by step using Google Adwords Keyword Tool to choose a right keyword. If you want to write about “how to speak in public”, what keyword phrase should you choose?
1. Firstly, go to the Google Adwords Keyword Tool website. You may see the screenshot like below.
2. Now you may type in the keyword phrase you wish to check for. In this case, we can type in the “how to speak in public” in the keyword space provided. Remember to type in the security words correctly.
3. After you click on the “Get keyword ideas” button, you may see there are many data on the screen. The first column is the keyword that related to what we are searching. The second column shows the number of advertiser competition for that phrase. The third column shows the number of search for that phrase in the previous month. The fourth column shows the average number of search for recent 12 months period. Therefore, we can see that the average number of search for recent 12 months period for the keyword phrase “how to speak in public” is 1900. That is not good enough for us.
4. Now, we want to know how much the advertisers are willing to pay for the keyword. Click on the “show/hide columns” and choose the “show estimated avg. CPC”. This is an essential step if we really want to make money with Google Adsense.
5. Now we can see the average CPC for the keyword phrase. We can see there is no any estimated average CPC shown for this phase. We need to choose the other keyword phrase. Scroll down and search for the more suitable but related keyword phrase. Click on the “Estimated Avg. CPC” to compare the rate. We can see that the CPC of “public speaking” is $6.47 and the average number of search is 550,000. Amazing! This is the keyword phrase that we want. Yet, it only meets the 2 criteria of a good keyword. We still need to check for the number of competitors that using the same keyword for their website or blog.
6. Open a new tab from your browser. Go Google.com and search for the phrase “public speaking”. Wow! There are 32,200,000 search results for this keyword phrase. It is too difficult for us to compete with this large number of competitors as a new blog. Maybe we should try another long tail keyword phrase.
7. We can try for the keyword phrase “public speaking tips” again with the Google Adwords keyword tool. The result shows that there is $9.37 for CPC and 18,100 average searches.
8. Again, we need to go Google.com to know the number of competitors. There are 6,380,000 search results for this keyword phrase. Although it can be considered as a huge amount, it is the best in my opinion. Therefore, I will choose the “public speaking tips” as my keyword phrase.
You have seen step by step how to use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to do the keyword research. Sometimes, we really need our great analysis mind to decide for our own which is the best keyword to be used when building our blog.

I am actually using this tool. Very great tool in increasing adsense earnings as you are going to figure out how much advertisers actually pay. But sometimes, I talked on my blog some stuff which has very low CPC- what is important as it drive traffic to my blog. Not such a big deal as browsing other related articles bring the user to the post targeting high paying ads.

Hi KS. Well doing research is just a step but you also need writing contents and place the adsense codes to places where you can get maximum clicks.
of course you need to drive traffic as well. Learn how to use email marketing is your first step to get earnings than just adsense alone.
Anyway nice to meet you here!
Hi Proson! Nice to meet you too.

Hey there KS Chen,
Keyword research tools are cool and the CPC is great to help decipher potential BUT what most people don’t realize is that the CPC generally is meant for organic search listings and not the content network. While it will give you an overall assessment of what advertisers value in terms of the conversations, it isn’t indicative of the amount of money that a click is worth.
I have had clicks that outpaced the average CPC and have had clicks that were .05 when the average CPC was $1.12.
I believe that some of the factors that determine what a click is worth include where the traffic is coming from (organic search versus social) as well as the quality of the site itself. I think that conversions also account in the cost per click factor.
Oh, and one more thing….
Don’t judge the competition of long tail keywords simply from what you see. Long tail keywords are naturally going to look like they have a lot of competition. Using search operators can help you decipher the true value of a keyword as to whether it is worth being pursued or not.
One of the greatest “eyeball” detectors is to see if there are any social sites or article directories within the first couple pages of the keyword. If so, chances are you will be able to rank for it fairly quickly.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Good post.

I won’t vouch for software very often however this new service is brilliant. It’s a key phrase tool with a database of millions of key phrases showing the adwords traffic count monthly along with the google competition count as well as other data.
At a click of a button you will discover keyword phrases with traffic but no competition and I’ve used it already to get pages and web sites to the top of the search engines, even with no backlinks.
You can look at a video of it in use here – http://MarketEyeSite.com
